Bangladesh: Government closes down project for human rights defenders

Sazzad Hussain from Odhikar tells us how the government of Bangladesh tried to close down their project on training human rights defenders. In the framework of this project, parliamentarians, jail authorities, heads of district administration and police, lawyers, local journalists and members of NGOs and civil society organisations have been sensitised about the need for ratification of the Optional Protocol of the Convention against Torture (OPCAT). In addition, 25 grassroots level human rights defenders have developed their reporting and fact-finding skills for promoting more respect for human rights in the project areas. Sazzad advocates for the need for greater diplomatic support from the European Union in such cases.
