Refugee Mothers - Georgia

The author of this series “Refugee-mothers, Georgia, 2008” is Mariam Amurvelashvili – a Georgian photographer. This photo series won 1st prize in an international photography competition “The socio-economic situation of women from Central Asia and Eastern Europe” carry out by KARAT Coalition. Those photos depict women in the refugee camps in Georgia after military conflict between Georgia and Russia in 2008. As a consequence of this conflict there are thousands of internally displaced persons.

The region of Caucasia is known as a home to dozens of nationalities, ethnic groups and languages, many of which have troubled relationships with their neighbours or with Russia. There are regions which has not clear status, aspire to be independent states, but are not recognized by Russia or other countries. This results usually into conflicts and make questions about their national, ethnic identities, about their rights as minorities, rights to territory etc. The regions with unstable and unsecure situation in Caucasia are: Chechnya, Ingushetia, North Ossetia, Dagestan, South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

The most vulnerable group in military operations are always women who has this responsibility to create house and grow the children very often in hard and unsecure conditions and at the same time are forced to take a role of bread winners, while the men fight very often in military operations. In Caucasia there are still groups and nationalities where gender roles are defined in a traditional way which makes women situation even more difficult especially when she is left alone with children (E.P., KARAT Coalition).
