Asia: Farah Mihlar and Samia Khan discuss conflicting interests within minority communities

This is a recording from the Minority Voices conference, held in Budapest in July 2010.

In this recording:

MRG’s Farah Mihlar is sharing thoughts about the uniqueness of minorities and indigenous peoples. Unless these cultural attributes and their close ties with nature are not taken into consideration when doing development work, it can have a detrimental effect to the communities. She brings up a school and a road building project as examples. Picking up on Farah’s ideas, development consultant Samia Khan talks about conflicting interests within minority communities and indigenous peoples and the presence of gender-based discrimination or violence. Both highlight the importance of consultation between decision makers and communities and their mutual involvement in the implementation process.
