Nepal: Dalit girls' education suffers due to late start at school

The Feminist Dalit Organization has produced a report surveying Dalit girls' education in Nepal entitled Late comers in school: The status of Dalit girls in education.

Dalit girls in Nepal are the last to be enrolled in school and begin their education late due to their low status in society. Through extensive consultation with parents, students, teachers, political parties, Dalit activists and others, the study team found that the delay in Dalit girls starting school often has a negative affect on their education. The report shows that Dalit girls are irregular in attending school, are underachieving in their studies, face caste- and gender-based discriminations, and eventually drop out from school. The report also presents key recommendations for improving Dalit girls’ education.
