MRG Event: Business, natural resources and minority rights

Minority Rights Group International (MRG) is holding a seminar on business, natural resources and minority rights in London, UK, on 17 October 2012.

While the principle of corporate responsibility for human rights is gaining ground, the rights of minorities and indigenous peoples have not been given sufficient attention. As a result, these communities around the world continue to face eviction from their lands and other violations of their rights caused by private sector development and extractive projects, such as mining, oil and gas, and logging activities.

In June 2012, MRG published the first ever global survey of the impact of natural resources projects on minorities and indigenous peoples: The State of the World’s Minorities and Indigenous Peoples: focus on land rights and natural resources. Download the chapter on corporate responsibility, which includes relevant recommendations, here

The seminar will build on this ground-breaking research by bringing together lawyers, representatives from NGOs, inter-government organisations, companies and industry associations to discuss the role of business in upholding minority and indigenous peoples’ rights to land and natural resources. This discussion will include sharing good practice, identifying areas for improvement and how various sectors can work together to achieve this.

Seminar details:

Date and time: Wednesday 17 October 2012, 1300 – 1700 (venue tbc but will be in central London)

Please RSVP by Monday 10 October to letting us know if you have any access or other special requirements. If you are unable to attend, please feel free to pass this invitation on to a relevant colleague if they would like to come instead.
