VIDEO: Speaking out for minority women in Somalia

At the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict, Minority Rights Group hosted an interactive storytelling event at London's ExCel centre. The event featured influential guest-speakers who had travelled from Somalia in order to raise awareness about the plight of minority clans in their home country.

Frequently overlooked by international media, female members of minority clans took centre stage at the MRG event. Hon. Bibi Khaliif Mohamed, a Somali MP and member of the Constitution Review Committee, told us the story of three-year-old Habiba, a child of minority status who found herself and her family confronted with sexual abuse, violence and risk of death during the civil war of the 1990s. Audience members had the opportunity to pose questions to our panelists about the reality of minority-majority segregation in Somalia and what the international community can do to alleviate the ongoing crisis.
