Cattle rustling in South Sudan

The video focuses on a cattle rustling attack that killed one man and injured another in Jonglei state. There is a lot of tension between ethnic groups in Southern Sudan. Due to competition for scarce resources herders from different tribes often fight over access to water or grazing land, and they often steal each other's cattle. This attack occurred just days before the independence referendum, which will see a new country emerge on July 9.

In a briefing paper launched in June, MRG warned that ethnic tensions fueled by unequal access to resources and political influence in South Sudan could increase violence and threaten the future of the new country.
